BRANDON -- Drake Mosienko of the Elmwood Giants was named Manitoba's junior player of the year on the weekend at the Manitoba Baseball Association's awards night. Mosienko went 7-0 with an 0.61 ERA and 53 strikeouts while hitting .333 and leading the Manitoba Junior Baseball League in doubles, home runs and RBI. He also led the Giants to the league championship and won the Jack Hind Trophy for pitcher of the year and the Eddie Cass Memorial Trophy as most valuable player. The MBA handed out awards in 14 categories overall and inducted three people into the association's honour society. The association also held its election of officers. Ken Sharpe of Minnedosa is president, taking over from past-president David Holt of Winnipeg. Altona's Ken Wiebe is treasurer.
Other winners included:
* Pee Wee player of the year: Paul Kraemer, Winnipeg South AAA. Opened season with no-hitter, named first team all-star pitcher at national championship. * Bantam player of the year: Chris Perron, Winnipeg South AAA. Catcher led team to silver medal at both provincial and Western Canadian championship. * Midget player of the year: Miles Johnson, Interlake AAA. Led squad to second place finish at provincials, was one of Manitoba's two catchers at Canada Summer Games. * Senior B player of the year: Bud Penner, Mitchell Mariners. Premier defensive player in Winnipeg Senior League, easily won batting title too and was named first-team all-star shortstop and MVP. * Senior A player of the year: Darrick Jones, Killarney Lakers. All-star catcher and Manitoba Senior League MVP. Led league in home runs, RBI, walks and finished third in batting with .357 average.
* Grassroots coach of the year: Rick Baldwin, Gross Isle. Team won silver medal at provincial championship. * High Performance coach of the year: Bryan Ezako, Winnipeg South Pee Wee AAA. Team finished first in regular season and won provincial title.
* Volunteer of the Year: John Matas, Winnipeg South/River Heights.
* Youth Umpire of the Year: Sid Rashid, Morden.
* Umpire Award of Merit: Bruce Potter, Pilot Mound. * Grassroots Team of the Year: Plum Coulee Pee Wee AA. Won South Central championship, went unbeaten at provincials to claim town's second provincial title. * High Performance Team of the Year: Elmwood Giants Junior AAA. Finished first in regular season, swept through playoffs to claim 10th title in franchise history. Finished 2-4 at nationals.
* Region of the Year: Brandon Minor Baseball.
* Honour Society inductees: Gilles Normandeau, Carillon; Jack Hrehirchuk, Dauphin; Brian Savage, Stonewall.
