Sorry to interrupt this lovely little nostalgia trip, but it’s about the idea being kicked around for a week or so that the Bombers should bring back Khari Jones.
My take: don’t go there.
Look, I was always a fan of No. 17. Thought he was unappreciated in many corners here given his accomplishments. And he was a lot tougher QB than most knew because of the punishment he regularly took.
But there are two compelling reasons, I think, for not having him come back to try and help the Bombers while Kevin Glenn heals up:
1. He’s got a sideline gig with CBC right now and those jobs aren’t easy to come by. Asking him to give that up for a couple of weeks - what if Glenn is back by Labour Day? - and then spend the rest of the year in uniform holding a clipboard is an insult to his legacy.
2. He’s been cut by the Eskimos twice, the Stamps once and also the Ticats. If teams still thought he had ability, why hasn’t he found work anywhere?
Look, the Bombers need a band-aid right now. Mike Quinn and Brad Banks at least know the offence (although, you’d be hard-pressed to sell that right now). The Bombers, it says here, are taking the right approach: find some short-term QB depth while Glenn heals and then wait for one of their half dozen NFL prospects to come free when the cuts begin over the next few weeks.
