Keeping up with Wilson and Jones…
Two thumbs up from this perch for the latest Bomber moves.
You’ll read about it in detail in tomorrow’s paper, but the Bombers have added O-lineman Eric Wilson and are closing in on Garrick Jones. Those additions - plus what I saw in practice today - are solid adjustments for a team that’s lost four straight.
First, Wilson brings an attitude to the OL and allows the club to move Mike Abou-Mechrek back inside to guard. No offence to big Abou, but he hasn’t got the feet to play outside and is more of a brawler than a technique guy. Ditto with Wilson, but he’s got a better skill set after spending the last couple of years training with the Miami Dolphins.
And although it’s not official, expect the Bombers to add Garrick Jones in time for next week’s game in Calgary. Those are two huge additions that could have a monumental impact on the Bomber offence.
As well, Kyries Hebert took a lot of turns today at practice at linebacker instead of safety. Solid move. When Hebert was brought here he was dubbed a ‘heat-seeking missile’ by D co-ordinator Greg Marshall, who worked with Hebert in Ottawa. Sorry, but I just wasn’t seeing the missile part from the safety spot. For a guy making over 100K, Hebert hasn’t been enough of an impact player. Maybe moving him into the box will help.
That switch means rookie Ian Logan and/or Shawn Gallant will get long looks over the next two days at safety. If it means more production up front and ability to stuff the run again, this is a move that could help the defence find its old dominant form of just a few weeks ago.
Cheers
