It’s a start…

Blue Bombers 27 Roughriders 23

It may have been a little rough around the edges, but credit the Bombers for today’s Banjo Bowl win over their Prairie cousins.

They won the battle at the line of scrimmage, limited the Riders vaunted ground game and got just enough offensive production from an attack that had been dormant for well over a month.

And while we know it’s still early September, consider the implications of the result: The Bombers, now 6-6, are within two points of the East-leading Montreal Alouettes (7-4) and Toronto Argonauts (7-5) and now keep the Edmonton Eskimos, who are 4-7, back in the crossover playoff picture. The Esks still have to finish with more wins than the Bombers to take third in the East and have just seven regular-season games remaining.

But today’s win wasn’t about crossover spots or first-place in the East. It was simply about stopping an ugly nosedive that had left many questioning the legitimacy of the Bombers’ early 5-2 start.

Mission accomplished… for one week, at least.
