Ryan Dinwiddie appears to have emerged as the front-runner in a three-way battle for Sherdrick Bonner’s backup at quarterback. He had the best scrimmage last week for the Rattlers against the Los Angeles Avengers and performed well Tuesday against the Kansas City Brigade.

Nobody has said as much yet, but you can pretty much expect the Bombers to back off in CFL free agency now that they’ve added Andrew Greene and Davin Bush and traded for Alexandre Gauthier.
They’ll still chat with linebacker Ike Charlton, to be sure, but the thin free-agent talent pool means the team will likely back off now and  possibly  keep a close eye on the waiver wire to see who may become free as salary-cap victims across the league. Example: already in Edmonton they’re talking about cutting more of their veteran talent. And one of the names mentioned is veteran linebacker Singor Mobley. Given Charlton’s status, that is definitely a name that should be on the Bomber radar screen.
As for the additions of Greene and Gauthier, some critics have suggested adding a 37-year-old and then dealing a first and third rounder - along with Garrick Jones - to get Gauthier is mortgaging the future. I’d humbly suggest otherwise. More than ever, CFL teams have to play to win now as they try to figure out the nuances and loopholes in the new salary management system. Greene and Gauthier are clear examples the Bombers figure they are close and want to take their run in ’07.
Cheers
