Rick Martino: Bunker shots have come a long way (TCPalm.com)

The bunker was the early golf course designers’ defense mechanism to protect from low scores. These rough and naturally occurring sand pits — often dug by sheep sheltering themselves — were used to catch errant golf shots. The player was then forced to extract their ball, hoping to advance it with the loss of only one-stroke.
