As I'm inclined to do most of the time, I like to look quickly at the "how to" books and other personal development books, as well the others too. It's a great side benefit of an online bookstore-"tidsbits of knowledge daily based on what other people are voting for with their pocketbooks". The book that got a bit of my attention today was "Super Self-Doubling Your Personal Effectiveness" by Charles Givens. A very nearly new condition hardcover by the way of this 1993 book which is what we try to do to distinguish ourselves in a crowded marketplace. Very good condition used or like new copies. Givens is known for his wealth books and seminars in the 80's and 90's

His Success Strategy No. 1 is worth repeating. Most of us who need personal development and growth have failed at some things or something. We have made many mistakes. To make quantum leaps forward we may have to rely more on the experiences of others who have been successful than learning from the "school of hard knocks" which has been our own life. We keep going back to old methods and habit that repeat our problems and I can say with experience based just on relationships in my past. Or look at your choice of jobs or business activities.

His strategy based on the notion that doing more of what doesn't work won't make it work any better is "Learn From The Experiences Of Other, Rather Than Your Own". This will cut the learning curve time frame and the change curve in your life dramatically, he says, and I tend to agree. Learning the right methods to personal and business effectiveness and having them become formed habits in the shortest possible time, as opposed to the trial and error of our own experiences, is the basis of
the "Super Self" as he calls it.

And with that I carry on with my day. Make one key change in your life today based on what you know or see successful people doing regularly! I concur with Givens, you won't regret it.

It's Tour Championship Time For the Best 30 Golfer's on the Men's Tour. The end of the line for this year officially. With not much on the tube to compete with it, it will get a lot of eyeballs this Thursday through Sunday.

The Tour doesn't appear to want to sit still, which I applaud. Golfers will be debating the new mega-championship proposal commissioner Tim Finchem announced yesterday.

Many golfers, no matter what ability level, will be thinking next year, next season. for changes they want to make in their game. This program from one of our blog sponsors Is worth looking at.

This is a post I made about two weeks that I posted to one of my website. I've decided I'd like to share the message more widely.

Last week, I gave blood, took part in the Terry Fox Run raising money for cancer research, and also the Rock for Relief fundraiser by the Canadian Red Cross/92 Citi Fm and Two Small Guys with Big Hearts Trucking raising money for Hurricane Katrina relief. A couple of quarters for a panhandler, a few more bucks here and there for other causes that approached, and lot of thinking about making a difference. Who is this masked man, others asked? The World's Rearranger (thank you Robert Plant)

A funeral for a fine young man, Dustin Hickie, 16, a close friend of my daughter, touched me deeply. Why is the answer to cancer's ravages still so elusive? There is so much more I can do in my life on earth to help others, even a bit, and I knew my effort had been weak at best so far.

So I gave myself a kick in the pants with the help of Dustin and my friend Del and my father and others who have gone before. But it still begs the questions, why does it often take someone leaving this world to get us to act? Why are we so insulated? How can we, as individuals, act against the pain and suffering, hunger and illness without turning ourselves inside out again and again with feelings of hopelessness and helplessness? How can we stop the tears for a while and see the lights of hope again?

The opportunities to to make a difference will appear, if we keep our eyes and ears open and we find out what touches us personally. What brings tears to our eyes and sobs to our chest? Or just get involved. What is the first thing we think of in the morning...the last thing at night. Your passion for these things will keep you coming back.

It took the death of a young man I didn't know well, but I liked, far too early in life, to give me better focus. Other events had hurt but did not have that effect. In this way he lives on with me and my daughter. You will find inspiration in your life to make a difference if you look.

I can do more! I hope you can to.

Pebble Beach is this week. I love that tournament. Bill Murray is usually the star of the show on Saturday. Then comes the golf test on Sunday. The golf season is well underway. Winter is coming to an end soon. More and more folks are starting to think about how they are going to get their golf game in shape this season. There are many resources available to you. The key I've always felt is to practise regularly and to adopt a system for your play and practise. I may have mentioned this previously but I just received a note from Jack Moorehouse, who has a best selling golf ebook, "How to Break 80...And Shoot Like the Pros." He says the price will go up soon, but in the meantime you can get a special bonus that seems right on target for most of us and appropriate to what I said early about a practice system: "25 Lessons To Improve Your Game Immediately' plus more. The book also has got a 90 day guarantee he says. (We are a marketing partner of Jack's just so it's clear). Click here to see the How to Break 80 book offer . As I said before, my advice is to find a system or method and/or teacher that you will trust fully to get your game to the next level. What books, teachers or teaching methods have you found useful in the past? Let us know in the comments.

Can you answer these questions about athletic scholarships and recruiting? You may know someone in or outside our family who is hoping to play university sports and receive a quality education. Pass this link on to them.

I represent the College Prospects organization (http://www.cpoa.com), have for over 13 years, and they have forwarded some questions that they find most student-athletes and parents can't really answer properly.
_________________________________
What is your recruiting IQ?

Are you on the recruiting lists of college coaches? Even if you are, where do you rate? Are you the #1 choice? #10? #25?

What is an EFC; what does it mean to your family and how do coaches use that information to determine how much financial aid the student-athlete may receive?

Division III schools can't give athletic scholarships. How, then, are athletes attending these schools and playing sports at greatly reduced costs?

Do you understand the seven steps of the Recruiting Funnel and the role of the student-athlete?

What are the two main reasons why talented student-athletes are not recruited?
_______________________________________________________________

Understand: If you're not receiving multiple phone calls from college coaches March or May (depending on your sport) of your Junior year, you run the risk of not being recruited.

The journey to being seriously recruited by college coaches starts here. For nearly 20 years, College Prospects of America has helped thousands of talented student-athletes from all over the world receive scholarship and financial aid monies from coaches who, in many cases, had no idea these athletes existed. Thousands of superior athletes have been and will continue to be overlooked because parents and students do not act proactively to ensure that coaches know about them.

To get answers to the questions please visit the main College Prospects website , then go to their video presentations you can view on site, or contact me directly:

A strong word of caution. These people will take advantage of having your credit card info on file and make charges against it without notifiying the cardholder. Getting the money refunded is next to impossible, even after they admit their "error". Avoid addr.com at all cost is the bitter lesson I've learned.

Mini-book on University Recruiting and Athletic Scholarships
The university application process and the recruiting process for scholarships can be very confusing.
In my 12 years of working with student-athletes and parents I've always told them that the more information they have, the better the process can work in their favor. More information means usually more leverage and fewer mistakes. That's not all it takes. I suggest you need a systematic process too, but more on that some other time. The booklet includes articles on the following subjects:

Junior Year and Earlier, Senior Year, Recruiting Trips, Planning for your Senior Year, The Big Trip, What Coaches Want, Narrowing the List, Marketing Yourself, Tips for Choosing The Right College, Interview, and A Coaches Perspective.

Learn While Playing And Having Fun. What a Concept!- Portions of Market Wire News Release from a golf academy below.

New Golf School Format Bridges the Gap Between the Driving Range and the Golf Course
TAHOE CITY, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 12/15/2003 -- Taking a break from the usual range-hitting, golf-teaching school format, North American Golf Academies teaching staff drives motivation with actual play lessons. The Golf Academies five-school agenda carts students to a different championship course each day where they receive customized playing instruction. Students also do two hours of customized range instruction as well, followed by video analysis and then an 18-hole playing lesson. The student-teacher ratio is an amazing two-to-one.

Said company spokesman Mark Kackley, "Our title should definitely be 'The New Golf School.' No other golf school in the country has this type of format." Eschewing the usual driving range monotony, the five schools allow students to actually play at challenging courses to get the feel of the game. Following individually structured play, the professionals give stroke-by-stroke video analysis.

"It's a stroke of genius," said one satisfied student after participating in an 18-hole playing lesson on one of the area's top championship golf courses. "Other golf schools I've attended have been on the same nine-holes of the same course, day after day. This is a challenge as well as a fun way to lower my handicap. After learning to play on these competitive courses, I can play on any course in the world."

Director of golf at North American Golf Academies, Michael Kurilko, said, "We will not try to break down a player's swing, but instead, we will build additional skills and knowledge to what is already naturally there." A former tour player and head teaching pro in Charlotte, North Carolina, Mr. Kurilko came to North American Golf Academies from the Nike Academy, where he's applied to teaching the golf skills he has developed since the age of six. His focus is on building and adding to each player's own game. He said, "We will help each player better understand how to play the game of golf by using their strengths and avoiding their weaknesses."

The schools are located in such beautiful parts of the country as Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Breckenridge, Colorado and its international site in Whistler, British Columbia. Tuition ranges from $1,295 to $1,895 for 2-3 day programs for singles or doubles and includes transportation to and from the airport, 7 hours of daily instruction, lunch daily, green fees with cart, 2 or 3 nights lodging, collared shirt, bag tag, towel, hat, 1 dozen logo golf balls, and a take-home swing analysis video.

Is this the year for Gift Certificates?
My friends are starting to talk about Christmas. Who is giving what to whom? How much? What to do for my two teenage daughters? My anxiety level is starting to rise. This is a link to a program that I'm involved with that can help with gift certificates for premium seating for the best upcoming concerts or theatre, nba and ncaa basketball, nhl hockey, nfl and ncaa hockey and nascar events. Give it a look if you're starting to think ahead like I am.

Recently I had the experience of having my whole car and luggage searched by Canada Customs officials at Emerson. Maybe we appeared too shifty, maybe we looked like we might have bought $5 more than our 24 limit of $100. $50 each per person. The customs officer said to us, "stand in front of the car we're we can see you". I was waiting for the "keep your hands on the hood at all times" line next.

In the end, customs officials did their job and we're probably written up somewhere as an example of a successful search and how to spot lawbreakers. Our purchases were below the limit as we stated, yet they found we had 1 small bottle of Aleve painkiller in our possession (an old sports injury) which we had bought in the US over the counter. We learned this product cannot be brought into Canada because it needs to be provided by prescription. There may be many others. We've learned. Ignorance is no defence. Don't be an "aleve lawbreaker".

Was looking at the how-to's of keeping your existing cell phone # when changing to a new provider. Here's some information at the Amazon along with a very nice phone, the Sony Ericsson T610. Look part way down the page to Special Offer: keep your existing phone #. Phone offer includes free Bluetooth headset as well I noticed. (standard disclaimer)

Dr. Patrick Cohn has these insights on how to putt the fast greens at Augusta. Easy to translate his thoughts to your game when you play on a course and greens which is tougher than you're used to playing.

"Mental Keys to Conquering the greens at Augusta:

This is no time to overhaul the stroke. If a player has stroke problem and is focused more on stroke than on line and speed, he is domed from the first putt of the tournament.

Players must tune up their touch on the greens by hitting a ton of longer putts. Touch develops by hitting every possible putt the golfer may face in the tournament. He must practice putts left to right, right to left, uphill, downhill, sidehill, you name it. Specific drills for developing touch are paramount.
The player must love to use the putter on every hole and relish the challenge of the greens. A fearless attitude is critical to putting free. If a player worries about three-putting, he'll probably four-putt!
Finally, every one has to have a short memory for lip outs and missed birdie opportunities on the greens. A player must convince himself that par is a good score. Even a great putter on top of his game must accept par, interpret lip outs as a sign of good putting to come, and react to a three-putt with the composure of someone with amnesia. Attitude and patience will go a long way towards the goal of conquering the greens at Augusta."

Investing Now-Good or Bad? by Jonathan Chevreau with a Canadian slant

from the "I get all my best material from the sports pages department"
Winnipeg Free Press, C3, March 30/03

Sports Illustrated asked Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, Olympic figure skating champions, who have been dating for three years, if they ever get turned on while skating. "You know what I'm thinking about?" Pelletier answered. "I'm thinking about staying vertical, and I'm not talking about the little guy."

Tiger Woods won the Bay Hill Invitational by 11 strokes despite getting sick on the final day from bad pasta prepared by his Swedish girlfriend, Elin Nordegren. Says Ron Rapoport of the Chicago Sun Times: "He wants her to cook, too?"

and this golf widow funny:

Woman whose husband has just died goes into the local newspaper office to get an obituary published. The obt editor informs her there is a charge of 50 cents a word. She reflects and says, "Make it read, 'Bob Smith died.' " Amused at the woman's thrift, the editor tells her there is a seven-word minimum. After thinking it over, she says, 'Let it read, 'Bob Smith died. Golf clubs for sale'."

What caught me eye as I looked through it again was the great assortment of shots he teaches/depicts that I haven't seen together too many other places. Great names: High Flyer, Tree Dodger, Parachuter. Hardpan Handler. Worth every penny you get if for if you want to lower your golf score.
