Xbox hopes for 360 success (USATODAY.com)

USATODAY.com - When Microsoft’s Xbox 360 goes on sale Tuesday, hard-core gamers and early adopters will all but ensure midnight sales, long lines and sellouts. But for the rest of us, the key question remains: Will 360’s advances represent a whole new game or just a hop up to the next level? The answer is yet to come.

First Base

Today we’re excited to announce Google Base, an extension of our existing content collection efforts like web crawl, Google Sitemaps, Google Print and Google Video. Google Base enables content owners to easily make their information searchable online. Anyone, from large companies to website owners and individuals, can use it to submit their content in the form of data items. We’ll host the items and make them searchable for free. There’s more info here.

Some organizations are already using Google Base. Here are a few examples.

  • “Students need as much information as possible when they are searching for the right college or university. Google Base helps us reach students and parents and deliver more of the information they need when making important college decisions.” - Hal Higginbotham, President, CollegeBoard.com
  • “We want to use knowledge and information about the environment to help motivate more responsible public and private action. With Google Base, we can bring the public key insights on sustainability issues ? like climate change, human health, and resource consumption ? and bring about change.” ? Amy Cassara, Senior Associate, World Resources Institute
  • “CareerBuilder.com’s business model is built on providing employers with as many avenues as possible to connect with job seekers. Feeding our jobs to Google Base further extends our distribution network, providing employers with added support in marketing their open positions.” - Richard Castellini, VP of Consumer Marketing, CareerBuilder.com
  • “We compile an enormous amount of valuable data on fine art and artists, and we want collectors, dealers, students and art aficionados to have easy access to this information. Google Base enables us to reach more people researching art and get them the information they need.” - Brent Peich, Director of Marketing, Artnet
  • “Our mission is to make it easy for small businesses to use the web to drive in-store sales. Google Base gives us an ideal outlet to promote and distribute content about local products more broadly.” - Kendall Fargo, Founder & CEO, StepUp Commerce

Right now, there are two ways to submit data items to Google Base. Individuals and small website owners can use an interactive user interface; larger organizations and sites can use the bulk uploads option to send us content using standard XML formats.

Rather than impose specific schemas and structures on the world, Google Base suggests attributes and item types based on popularity, which you can use to define and attach your own labels and attributes to each data item. Then searchers can find information more quickly and effectively by using these labels and attributes to refine their queries on the experimental version of Google Base search.

This beta version of Google Base is another small step toward our goal, creating an online database of easily searchable, structured information. As always, we welcome your feedback and ideas.

Arizona @ St. Louis

Average Forecasted Score: Cardinals 21.2 Rams 28.1
Kurt Warner faces the team that made him an MVP. Unlike other MVP QBs facing their old franchise (Joe Montana as a member of the Chiefs facing the 49ers) there isn’t going to be very much fanfare. The chemistry between Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald is good, but other than their connecting for 6 catches, 80 yds and a TD, Arizona doesn’t produce enough offensively to keep up with the Rams who are nearing full strength. Arizona rookie JJ Arrington is finally registering positive yardage and got his first TD last week. The Cardinals have to hope he continues progressing because Marcel Shipp is not doing much. NOTE Graphic Above is based on initial simulations while Game Analysis and Forecasted Data below is updated throughout the week.

Buffalo @ San Diego

Average Forecasted Score: Bills 13.5 Chargers 27.1
While initial simulations had Kelly Holcomb starting, it’s a safe bet that JP Losman will get the start after playing well against the Chiefs and Holcomb day-to-day with a concussion. The data with Losman starting will be uploaded by Tuesday. While Buffalo held KC to just 3 pts, the Chiefs blew a lot of scoring opportunities. San Diego is clicking big-time on offense and are fresh after a bye week. The Bills struggled on the road to contain the Oakland Raiders and they face an even tougher task this week. San Diego is winning a solid majority of simulations. NOTE Graphic Above is based on initial simulations while Game Analysis and Forecasted Data below is updated throughout the week.

Carolina @ Chicago

Average Forecasted Score: Panthers 21.1 Bears 16.1
It’s not a criticism of Chicago but it is a valid point that they’ve benefited mightily by facing a string of weak opponents. This string ends with Carolina coming to town. WR Muhsin Muhammed gets his first crack at his old team. On a side note, how devastating would Carolina’s passing game be if they had Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammed? The weather report for Sunday looks OK for Chicago in November (43 partly cloudy). It will likely be windy as always which may interrupt the passing game for Carolina but Stephen Davis has been good getting tough yards. He may only average 2 or 3 yds per carry, but he gets them when it counts. Carolina’s Julius Peppers is playing like a terror after a somewhat slow start to the season. Carolina’s improving defense helps them get a road win. NOTE Graphic Above is based on initial simulations while Game Analysis and Forecasted Data below is updated throughout the week.

Detroit @ Dallas

Average Forecasted Score: Lions 19.1 Cowboys 24.1
While Dallas should obviously be pleased with the outcome of their 21-20 win at Philly they shouldn’t be pleased by their overall performance on offense and the fact that they gave up a season high rushing to the Eagles. Dallas should be able to run the ball far more effectively against Detroit than they did at Philly, a team that plays bizarrely good rush defense at home. In some ways Detroit may have wished that Joey Harrington wasn’t so good last week. By teasing the organization once or twice a season it always makes them want to stay with him for another season. Frankly, he has yet to ever play with his full complement of receivers and while Joey is certainly not a star QB, he may be a servicable starter if his receivers stay healthy. Detroit is coming up short at Dallas as the Cowboys are looking to get into the Playoffs knowing they have a pretty brutal remainder of the year. NOTE Graphic Above is based on initial simulations while Game Analysis and Forecasted Data below is updated throughout the week.

Indianapolis @ Cincinnati

Average Forecasted Score: Colts 27.6 Bengals 22
This is a big test for both teams. If the Colts can’t win on the road against a quality opponent they’ll be displaying a mental fortitude that champions inevitably displya. If Cincinnati wins they prove they are a legit contender this year and they can erase the memory of their home loss to Pittsburgh. The Bengals have more at stake since most would forgive the Colts if they lose once or twice this year. Right now the Colts are favored in EVERY match-up. A great defense combined with an offense that is actually getting better makes them a terrifying opponent to face. The Colts are winning over 60% of simulations as it’s becoming a mathematical impossibility for them not to win over 50%. NOTE Graphic Above is based on initial simulations while Game Analysis and Forecasted Data below is updated throughout the week.

Jacksonville @ Tennessee

Average Forecasted Score: Jaguars 22.6 Titans 17.2
Jacksonville needs to win out to have a good chance at a wildcard so expect them to come out sharp against Tennessee. The Jacksonville secondary has made big plays all year and Steve McNair has had interception problems this year — expect Jacksonville to get the big edge in turnover margin. Jacksonville also ran the ball well against the Ravens without Fred Taylor so that should not be a problem against the Titans defense. With rookie Matt Jones showing increasing ability to take his physical tools and turn them into yds and TDs the Jaguars have the big advantage on the road. NOTE Graphic Above is based on initial simulations while Game Analysis and Forecasted Data below is updated throughout the week.

Kansas City @ Houston

Average Forecasted Score: Chiefs 24.1 Texans 19.2
If Coach Dick Vermeil usually has tears after a big win, his team’s lackluster performance at Buffalo should cause him to cry until kickoff on Sunday. Houston is showing they don’t give up despite their terrible record and remote chances of winning. The Chiefs should have one more push in them to try and make the Playoffs so they should be better this week and win. Obviously if they lose than count them out and look for big changes in Kansas City for next year. NOTE Graphic Above is based on initial simulations while Game Analysis and Forecasted Data below is updated throughout the week.
