Technology bleeds the thrill from gambling (SFGate.com)

Dell XPS M2010 gets official

Well, we never really thought they’d have the guts to do it, but those kooky cats over at Dell just outted the XPS M2010 first seen at CES. It’s not a laptop, it’s not a desktop, it’s, well, something in between which isn’t always the best place to be. The XPS M2010 is pretty much spot-on to those leaked specs, meaning this roughly $4000 (about $8,000 fully spec’d) Windows Media Center PC maxes-out with a 2.16GHz Core Duo T2600, up to 4GB of dual-channel DDR2 memory, a 20.1-inch 1680 x 1050 LCD driven by a 256MB RADEON X1800 graphics card, up to 240GB of RAID 0/1 capable disk, 802.11a/b/g WiFi and a host of other features including a detachable Bluetooth keyboard with mouse, 1.3 megapixel cam integrated into the display bezel, and 8 built-in speakers with subwoofer and integrated high-definition audio. Portable? Well, this hog folds and has a handle but at nearly 20-pounds, you won’t likely be taking it any further than the nearest LAN party.

[Thanks, Andrew G]

DS Lite US street date broken, now available!

Filed under:

Whoa Nelly! We’re getting reports that Walmart and Target have jumped the gun on the June 11 DS Lite launch date and are selling DS Lites ahead of schedule. Forum jockeys over at Cheap Ass Gamer and elsewhere are declaring mixed success after febrile trips to their local big-boxes across the nation. So check it, skip the Trix this AM and go trolling the aisles — you might just get lucky.

The Big Three’s consoles: size matters

Filed under:

Just thought you’d like to know. And yeah, even thought it’s not the stylingest, we think aesthetically (if not the Wii then) the PStwo is probably our fav. But that’s just us.

P.S. -We understand the Wii’s not 100% accurately represented here. Looks pretty close though.

I’ve got Wie as a partner. Help!

I didn’t know how to take it when I found out that I’d be playing with Michelle Wie in the U.S. Open sectional qualifier on June 5 at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J. On one hand I thought, Hey, this is pretty cool. I’ll have a chance to watch a 16-year-old kid try to make history by becoming the first woman ever to qualify for a men’s major. Another part of me wanted to groan. Sad though I am to say it, playing with Michelle will probably make earning a spot in this year’s Open that much tougher for me.

That’s the day that Europe and the US will see a simultaneous release of the Xbox Live Vision camera, according to well-known gamer-cum-Microsoft employee Major Nelson. The Major did not reveal, however, what pricing will look like for the cam, which is meant for video-conferencing, video emails, and profile customization.

Nintendo releases Rumble Pack for DS Lite

No surprises here: Nintendo has loosed a version of the venerable Rumble Pak on Japanese DS Lite owners, with a US model forthcoming. Besides being smaller than its big brother in order to fit flushly in the Lite’s cartridge slot, the new Rumble Pak sports all the same vibrating goodness, and for the same price too. (In case you don’t remember, that price is a mere $10). Unfortunately, both versions of the Pak are still only supported by a handful of games, so here’s to hoping you haven’t beaten Metroid Prime Hunters yet.

Sony’s PlayStation Signature line of accessories

Filed under:

Need to drum up some cash? Sell accessories. Already sold a slew of accessories to your core audience? Sell some lux accessories to your so rich we don’t know what to do with it audience. Sounds like a plan for SCE, who launched their PlayStation Signature series to fashion conscious “adult” consumers well heeled enough to spend some serious cash at their popup PlayStation design store in Aoyama, but not wealthy enough to, say, buy The Simmons Jewelry Co.’s $35k PSP case. The PlayStation Signature includes: ¥13,000 MDR-EX90SL PSP headphones, a ¥2,200 acrylic PSP stand, ¥8,000 and ¥4,000 crocodile-like PSP and UMD case, ¥30,000 tote bag with PSP pocket, ¥15,000 rayon/poly blend shirt, ¥5,500 coin purse, ¥6,000 card case, ¥11,500 wallet, ¥5,500 t-shirt, ¥6,500 polo shirt, ¥4,800 PSP strap, ¥2,200 champagne flute, ¥2,200 red wine glass, ¥2,100 white wine glass, ¥20,000 notebook, ¥2,600 pen set, and a ¥33,600 Emeliio Pucci-designed crocodile or leather PSP case. Were you to buy all of these, you’d be paying ¥174,700, or $1,551 US to outfit yourself in all things PlayStation. When asked about the cultural ramifications of the Signature line, our Japanese correspondents both laughed at and expressed concern for Sony. We forgot to ask how you say “jump the shark” in Japanese.

Kutaragi: PlayStation 3 “is an expensive toy”

Filed under:

Ah, in the grand tradition of taking execs’ statements totally out of context, we present to you the latest bit of hubris from PlayStation father Ken Kutaragi. Speaking — once again — in defense of the PS3’s, um, luxurious price, Kutaragi-san apparently told game magazine Famitsu, “PlayStation and PlayStation 2 were both ¥10,000 [about $90 US] more than their competitors at launch. Yet they both sold to shortages.” Yes, well, it looks like the PS3 is going to be a little more than $90 more expensive than the Wii. But he’s not done yet: “If you consider the PlayStation 3 a toy, then yes, it is an expensive toy. However, it is more than a toy. It is a PlayStation 3. And it is the only PlayStation 3. I hope that those who understand this will gladly purchase it.” And there you have it; those who understand the PlayStation 3 is the PlayStation 3 — and the only PlayStation-freaking-3 that there is — should gladly want to purchase one. We’re hoping something got lost in translation there. We really are.
