Bet on Manchester to gamble sensibly (Times Online)

It is a parable for our times that Manchester is celebrating today because it has successfully bid to be the gambling capital of Britain. The place where cotton once was king, hub of the industrial revolution, the home of Victorian social reform, whe

Xbox 360 controller gets motion-sensitive

Sure the Xbox 360 has awesome games like Gears of War, but what good is all that bloody carnage when all the other next-gen systems have motion sensors? We were just ready to throw in the towel waiting for that extra level of game play, when modder Adam Thole answered our calls. Investing about two-and-a-half weeks worth of time, he was able to put together a fully-functioning wired 360 controller with a 2-axis accelerometer — and he makes the hack seem pretty straightforward. There are a lot of details on his site for those looking to emulate this mod, and Adam claims that he may even hack a wireless controller for version two. So keep on clicking for a vid of this hack-tastic mod in action, and then hit the Read link for the full deets…

Homebrew typing application for PSP pops up

Ever since the PSP launched, people have proclaimed to be waiting for a certain “something” that would kick its nearest rival off its pedestal, dig it a grave, and then nail it into its coffin, all in one fell swoop. We’re guessing that a keyboard attachment isn’t the combo move that the fanboys have been waiting for, despite the abandoned efforts of Logic, and the new, successful efforts of a coder called Moneytoo, who created a homebrew application that lets you hook up a Palm Universal Wireless keyboard to your PSP so that you can write simple text files. Nevermind that it won’t help with typing in crazy long SSIDs, WEP keys, or URLs, it’s still a rather impressive coding job, not least in the context of Sony’s repeated efforts to prevent people from running unsigned code on their little portables and Logic’s consequent failure to produce a PSP keyboard peripheral. The fact that Moneytoo made it possible to use a 3rd party peripheral which can be picked up on eBay for around $50 was a nice touch too, but considering that there’s currently no ability to save, or even open text files using the homebrew app, we’d recommend you hold onto your regular homework machine for a little bit longer. That beta tag doesn’t mean “better.”

Game Boy modded for less Tetris, more iPod

An NES controller-enhanced iPod is one thing, but to really put that tried-and-true old school Nintendo industrial design to some blasphemous new uses you’ll have to do what Flickr user “sirljohns” did, gutting an original Game Boy to make quite possibly the most badass iPod case ever. Sadly, the only Tetris you’ll be playing on the Game Boy once you’re done with it is the iPod’s own pale imitation, but at least you’ll still be able to make use of the Game Boy’s well-worn buttons, as they’re wired up to an internal dock connector to allow for full control without requiring you to slice open the iPod itself. The less technically proficient among us may want to click down a bit further in sirljohns Flickr photostream, where you’ll find details on modifying a vintage Sony WM-F10 Walkman for a less functional but only slightly less stylin’ iPod case.

Homebrew kids add another notch to their belt: Sony GPS support

We can’t really call this a loss for Sony, ’cause it’s still selling PSP widgets to these hackers, and we assume should be overjoyed at the kind of “in the face of all odds” homebrew scene its PSP still enjoys, but somehow or other Deniska has defeated The proverbial Man and released a new version of the MAP THIS! software which includes support for Sony’s official GPS. The little dongle only just hit Japan last month, so props to Deniska for the quick turnaround. If you’re hoping to do pull this off with your own PSP, you’ll need to import the receiver from some place like Play-Asia, and be running 3.03 OE-B open-edition firmware.

Mouse Computer’s gaming rig — for non-gamers

Japan’s Mouse Computer — best known for their effeminately named LuvBooks — is trying-on hardcore this morning by dressing up a couple of middling rigs in chain wallets, wife-beater Ts, and Vista Ultimate in hopes of nabbing a gaming PC classification. Let’s pop the hood and see shall we? The MASTERPIECE series (pictured) tops out with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo E6600 processor, 2GB of 333MHz PC2-5300 memory, 512MB of GeForce 7950 GT graphics, and 320GB of unspecified RPM disk. That’s the high-end box mind you. The NEXTGEAR series tops-out with a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo E6300, 2GB of RAM, 250GB of disk, and 256MB of GeForce 7900GS graphics… oh, puleeease. No dual-graphics option, quad-core QX6700 or Q6600 processors, or even an overclocked Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 in the bunch. Then again, these kits won’t set you back $10k either. Expect a well-equipped Masterpiece to hit later this month for ¥219,870 (about $1,813) while the Nextgear slides in at ¥179,970 (about $1,484) — sans monitor and Japan only… which is fine by us.
